Household recycling keeps waste out of landfills, plus it provides raw materials for new products – so it’s clearly a win-win situation. And now you can get more than just a sense of satisfaction from your efforts, thanks to recycling rewards and incentive programs like Recyclebank.
Recyclebank grew out of a Philidelphia-area pilot program launched in 2004. The beauty of the Recyclebank program is that it’s free, and unlike many energy efficiency programs, users in participating areas of the United States and the United Kingdom don’t need to do anything different. Homeowners simply keep using their own municipal recycling services, but they get rewarded for it with products or discounts. Credits earned through the program can be redeemed for items or discounts at a variety of outlets (including large national chains like Bed, Bath & Beyond, Footlocker, and Dunkin’ Donuts), or the points can be donated to environmental education programs.
Credits are awarded based on the weight of eligible recyclable materials, typically determined by sensors in the recycling carts or on the sanitation trucks in Recyclebank-affiliated regions. In addition to recycling, other “green living” activities can earn points too.
