Most of the country is still in the midst of summer heat. But when the time comes to clear those fall leaves from your yard, better steer clear of that gas-powered leaf blower. A recent study by Edmunds Inc. reveals just how filthy emissions from leaf blowers are – even compared to a full-size pickup truck.

The Edmunds test compared an Echo 2-stroke leaf blower to a 2011 Ford F-150 Raptor. It’s no secret that small 2-stroke engines are notoriously inefficient, but the test results were pretty shocking nonetheless. The bottom line? Compared with the truck, the leaf blower belched out 23 times as much carbon monoxide (CO) and 300 times the non-methane hydrocarbons. Meaning that a half-hour of yard work throws out as much hydrocarbon emission as driving the pickup truck 3,887 miles.
