The first LED light bulb on the market to glow as brightly as a 100 watt incandescent bulb has finally arrived. Osram Sylvania has introduced a new bulb in its Ultra LED line that consumes just 20 watts of electricity.
The Osram Sylvania Ultra is a 100 watt equivalent led light bulb that is compatible with dimmer switches. It requires no “warm-up” time like compact fluorescent bulbs, and contains no mercury. They produce omnidirectional light comparable to halogen or incandescent bulbs, with an 80 color rendering index (CRI) and a warm color temperature of 2700K.
The Ultra LED has a lifespan of 25,000 hours and consumes 80% less electricity than a traditional incandescent bulb, so despite a higher purchase price it will pay for itself many times. The long lifespan not only means fewer trips to the store for replacements, it also means fewer trips up a ladder to swap out those hard-to-reach ceiling lights. It’s also worth noting that replacing higher wattage incandescent bulbs with LEDs can be especially economical. In addition to reducing the energy used for lighting, LED bulbs produce much less heat, so your air conditioner won’t need to work overtime to offset the added warmth.
